Determining a specific timeframe for PESTLE analysis can pose a challenge. Sourcing high-quality forecasts can be equally demanding. With long planning horizons, it is hard to rely on analytical data. However, if we accumulate the necessary information in different areas, we can understand where things are going. If the forecasts change, which is not often the case, we rework our inferences. There is no other way.

In this article, we refrain from prescribing a rigid time horizon for the analysis. However, we do consider long-term trends that hold significance and warrant attention.

It’s important to acknowledge that your perspective may differ, and that’s perfectly acceptable. What truly matters is refining your planning horizon as you develop your strategy, thereby enabling the refinement of potential projects. Some of our strategic projects will not begin until several years from now, but even then, they will already incorporate the identified trends.

You determine your time horizon based on various factors, such as the life cycle and dynamics of your skills and your industry, target job markets, career aspirations, and personal preferences. 

For instance, if your goal is to secure a position at a cutting-edge company after graduation, a time horizon of five years may suffice. However, if you aspire to create and lead a an avant-guard company as early as your third semester of university, thinking even ten years ahead is not enough. It is also unlikely that a company that could be considered cutting-edge in five years will still be at the forefront in 25 years. During that time, new advanced fields will emerge.

A planning horizon ranging from 5 to 10 years is generally reasonable, although extending it to 15 years or even more may be appropriate.

Additionally, considering the life cycle of technologies is also advisable. In some cases, planning our future endeavors 50 years in advance can be suitable—specifically if our chosen path revolves around industries like artificial intelligence or biotechnology.

For comprehensive PESTLE analysis, you should align your chosen factors with your desired planning horizon. However, it is equally important to consider long-term trends rather than getting caught up in the hype of new robots that may pose risks to certain professions (though this aspect remains significant).

Should we exercise caution with our projects or consider divesting some of them? Those saving to purchase a home swiftly seized the opportunity once the crisis unfolded. Consequently, residential property prices soared while non-residential assets suffered.

The repercussions were severe for the corporation I worked for. Its real estate development business crumbled entirely.

A dreaded “margin call” transpired, causing the company’s asset value to plummet below its debt. Consequently, the company was compelled to surrender this business to the banks.
